| Saw the need to inform more about the accident which I believed many have already heard to serve more as an educational purpose for future local/overseas rides.. This is tj/guy riding the f moser..
I was the first to attend to the rider after he fell. Rider was using a BF tikit, has experience road riding at pengarang coast with some experience of the kukup route the day before. Although I didnt witness what exactly caused him to fall, another rider saw vigorous wobbling of the handle bar before he went down. The road was smooth without potholes but was a downhill with some gradient. The rider suffered a head impact and superficial hand injuries with some short term memory loss and quite an amount of blood loss but was conscious enough to stand by himself. A kind local driver sent him to a nearby clinic with Nick's accompany and now under observation.
After much discussion with the rider himself and other more experienced riders, KC, Patrick and others, we concluded that the rider did not have enough experience with the bike for such long distances and due to the nature of the bike having small wheels travelling at significant speeds, the chance of a fall becomes greater due to increased sensitivity of the small turn of the handlebar. I also observed the rider's tendency to sway from leftmost road towards the middle during the trip probably to avoid the potholes and to keep view of the road ahead.
Some pointers from the leader and experienced riders: 1. Refrain from travelling beyond certain speeds for small wheelers. 2. Tighten the headset to stiffen the steering 3. Avoid using a bike you do not have enough experience with 4. Stay behind the leader if you are not experienced with the road or with long distances. 5. Keep a distance from the immediate front rider especially at fast speeds and bad roads so you have sufficient reaction time. Inform your immediate rear rider not to tailgate too.
More pointers to add from others?
Thanks and ride safe.

| It was a great ride with you guys, great companions, very well organised, excellent leaderships, good food and great experience. I see great comradeship supporting and helping each other. I learn about the importance of having bike properly maintained and carrying some essential spare parts and tools for such long rides in overseas, I see the good, positive attitude of fellow riders following instructions from the leaders, enduring the pains, the tough terrains, smiling all the way and encouraging each other. This is the kind of attitude, friendships, leaderships we need for a long ride like this and this is what make it fun, enjoyable and precious.
Thank you Patrick for your great leadership. Thank you Eric, Clarence, Zack, Boo and Shareen for helping with safety, ride order etc. Thank you all for the fabulous companionship... making this ride wonderful.. I had a great time... THANK YOU!! |

| hi All,
I was rather shocked and lost of confidence after the incident. I did a post-mortem analysis/research of the accident so that in future one can avoid future situations: a. The handle bar was imbalance and overloaded due to a water bottle and two bags, and b. Coming down from steep slope caused the bike to be unstable due to higher speed, small wheel and situation in a. The small wheel has a smaller fork trail and with a greater hill gradient, the centre of gravity will force the bike crash.
Bottom line: Know the road, terrain and weather and get the right bike for touring. Get the back rack for pannier bags. I now know that touring, computing and road bike are very different and know the strength and weakness will help to ride safe.
FYI: I am now fine after the CT Scan and in the safety zone out of the 48 hours observation timeline. Thank you for Patrick, Nick, TJ, CK, many others in Ilovecycling group for your help. Have a safe ride ahead and don't speed like crazy me.
Best Regards
(PS: I can't join this Sat night 128km due to my injury) |
